After months of waiting, the scream of a naturally aspirated 2.4 litre V8 engine roars back into action and the teams get back to business. They have been developing the new cars for months now and finally get to put them through their paces.
Kimi Raikkonen sets the pace for the morning session with a 1:19.670 with over 50 laps done with the young British driver Paul di Resta in the VJMO5 just a tenth behind with a 1:19:772.
Eleven out of the twelve teams are running in Jerez with only Marussia F1 deciding not to run at the first test, Mercedes and HRT F1 have decided to run the 2011 cars at the first test with Mercedes just launching before the second test in Barcelona, Spain. It is still unknown when the new F112 will launch from HRT F1 but if it follows the trend of the past two years, it will not turn a wheel until the first weekend in Australia.
Red Bull had a late start to the days running as they were awaiting parts coming from the factory back in Milton Keynes and were delayed due to thick fog at the airport so were delivered to a another airport then transported to the track. Mark Webber only managed 8 runs in the morning session with a time of 1:21.474.
Lunch came and went quite quickly and the cars were back out on track again with Michael Schumacher taking over in the Mercedes in the place of Nico Rosberg.
Kimi Raikkonen finishes the day top of the times in the E20 with Paul di Resta just behind him with a 1:19.772 with a impressive 101 laps under his belt. Kamui Kobayashi topped the lap charts with 106 laps, the team was Williams F1 with only 25 laps.
