As speculation grows about a potential return to F1, the managers of Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen fuelled further rumours by appearing in the Williams team hospitality area of the paddock at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, while their driver was thousands of miles away, at the Welsh rally.
The signs are growing stronger that Raikkonen, the 2007 F1 world champion, is keen to come back to the sport that gave him 18 grand prix wins between 2001 and 2009.
Williams’ boss Sir Frank Williams finally confirmed on Sunday that his Oxfordshire based team has an interest in the 32-year-old for next year.
“Obviously, anyone worth his salt in any business will argue about the price of things,” Williams said.
“There is an argument going on, which of course is quite normal. I must choose my words carefully by saying only that it is possible.”
Team co-founder Patrick Head confirmed in Abu Dhabi that Williams’ interest in the former McLaren and Ferrari driver is hardly news.
“We were interested in Kimi when he drove for Sauber,” Head explained. “We proposed to our then partner, BMW to make him an offer but they thought it was too much money.”
